So the NYE Bash is all nice and confirmed now. If you want a cheap (£5), intimate (capacity 150) venue, playing out solid party music all night then you should probs come to From Beyond The Rave. So far, they've always been big and this promises to be the best one so far.

Graphic Novels Changed My Life

Ok, so I'm a big comic fan, standard I know, but just thought I'd share with you what I think are the three graphic novel which made me see the world differently. Not going to bother with the obvious stories or fables which I've already talked about (From Hell, Arkham Asylum etc.). This is about releases that redefined the genre and in turn, re defined how I saw my world. Ok here goes:

The Nightly News

This one was caused a small revolution in the comic world. It's illustrated/constructed by a graphic artist, which means the artwork completely bucks the boxed in style you expect in a comic.

Ignoring the slick style - which believe me, makes it very intuitive to navigate - the story itself is deeeeeep. I don't want to spoil it for you guys but I'll give a taster of what's to come.

It revolves around a group of activists (or terrorists depending on how you want to look at) who've decided the self-serving media world we now take for granted is the cause of all societies degradation. Your Nan's philosophy that 'TV is the Devil" taken to the limits. An organized (and charismatic) group head on a revenge campaign to dismantle the media-machine and have no qualms about making it brutal. I won't say anymore.

The Nightly News sucks you in from the start. I read it one sitting, which for me is rare. I work in TV myself, so I guess it had a real resonance with me, but it triggers all sorts of thoughts about the industry and it's role.

Expertly concieved and delivered in a fresh, fresh way. Check it.

Aquaman - Sword of Atlantis

Basically I get the piss taken out of me for liking Aquaman. A lot. But so what, I still think he smashes it. And although this didn't quite change my life like the others, it really made me aspire to dedicate more time to sketching and painting.

This edition of Aquaman sort of updates his backstory, by returning to the moment when he first acepts his own royal lineage as king of Atlantis. Now if you're not into comics you're probably thinking, shut the fuck up, I don't give a shit about this fishman. But wait ... The artwork is epic.

Washes of greens and blues help create a rich underwater world, which is ultimately very believable. The artist's - Butch Guice - attention to detail is admirable. The undersea empire he lays out has carefully thought out villages, warring races, wandering ascetics, queens, kings and rogues, all intricately drawn.

Get this to see how a comic paints a world, one which can sometimes be more lucid and believable than a great novel.

A Disease of Language

Just one Alan Moore this time. But this is no fable, like From Hell or Watchmen. This is a powerful book. In it, Moore and Eddie Campbell team up and use the medium to come to grips with deep issues, like philosophy, birth and creation itself.

The leaves contain a deep and penetrating insight into Moore's life view. Poetry crosses with ghostly etchings, to summon a cryptic vision of how he sees the world. When I read this it was like one giant footnote to all of his works, revealing how his visions have informed his body of work. But it's also a lot more than that. It a real example of how the genre can mind-bend you into positions you never knew existed. Yes it's image, yes it's word. But together it ain't film. It's something very unique.

Art, history, convention-bashing, lucid gut-spilling. That's that. Plus, it feels like the whole thing was scribbled down in one epic LSD binge.

Sorry about that, we've all been away in Marbella of all places. And weirdly enough it was just filled up with pure , undiluted prostitution . Hmm weird one. Anyway, we have a new name added to the DJ bill for From Beyond the Rave ! .....

We now have the very special Kid Icky a.k.a DJ Arrogance, one half of Nem and Ags, and a DJ of all things grimey, bassy and bitty, playing the downstairs crypt.

In honour of this special booking we've got a mix courtesy of the man himself, which we'll be uploading some time tonight or tommorow evening. Keep your eyes out for updates, and show him love if you're feeling it.

There's a few things we're into on this blog, and as a result, they crop up again and again. One of them is Burial. And the other .... is the Eternal Optimist, Niyi.

To commemorate his place in musical pantheon, we have here, for a limited time only, a high-res version of his latest track, Amelia. Click here to get your portion.

It marks a slight change in direction, away from the synth heavy, sweetboy grime-esque, honest talking "Poached Egg Phase" of his music making. It's more about tight piano loops (a la old skool rave) and pining love lyrics. Except it doesn't sound whiny, and it really works. Think The best of 90's Dance, meets Kc and JoJo.

The long awaited ... is still awaited

Ok, so the album I've been waiting for since late last year is the next installment in the DJ Kicks saga, which comes courtesy of Burial.

Dates have been all over the place for this one. First we were told July, then late July, then early August. And so on ... Similarly, the amount of fake tracklistings that have been doing the round on the message boards is just absurd. So much so, that the static state of Burial's myspace was briefly changed and he was forced to make this announcement.

MOORE AND MOORE

Hope you're enjoying the mix up posted below. But in other news, not sure if anyone loving their comics like I do, but the Watchmen Trailer if fresh off the press....

Now for those who don't already know about Watchmen, then you should. It was written by England's very own Alan Moore, and is undoubtedly, on the greatest Graphic novels of all time. I won't spoil it, just in case you get your eyes round to reading it, but think dystopian, think the darker aspects of being a superhero, questions of morality, authority and visceral emotions ... Also some of the most intricate storytelling ever.

Will the film live up to the Graphic Novel. Probably not, although at least Zack Snyder is directing it, about the only director (bar Nolan's recent efforts) who I could actually trust to do this sheez ...

Soooo ... Alan Moore is like the coolest comic writer ever. Other works that you must check out are of course.... From Hell, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Swamp Thing. Ignore the films, of course.

One final thing ... A bit of Trivia courtsy of imdb.com ...

When asked in an interview with ReelzChannel.com about original 'Watchmen' writer Alan Moore's dismissal of his movie, Snyder was quoted as saying "Worst case scenario - Alan puts the movie on his DVD player on a cold Sunday in London and watches and says, 'Yeah, that doesn't suck too bad.'"

When this was brought up with Moore himself in a later interview in the British Tripwire comics fanzine, the writer commented "That's the worst case scenario? I think he's underestimated what the worst case scenario would be... that's never going to happen in my DVD player in 'London' [Moore very famously lives in Northampton]. I'm never going to watch this fucking thing."

You get the idea ... Moore has been so disappointed with the treatment of his works by those over in Hollywood, he's had his name removed from all future movie adaption. Hopefully they won't f**k this one up.

Burial on Mercury

Burial has been nominated in the Mercury music award for his second album Untrue. True.

I wonder what he thinks about this? Standing shoulder to shoulder with Adele, British Sea power and the guy from the arctic north. Surely all talents of various levels but none scared of the limelight, you can be sure of that. Burial's chosen anonymity will stand sore in this process of click, clicks and flash bulbs. The media has its chosen list of credible musicians on which to feast; some will sit back relax and be snacks. Burial on the other hand I feel might be happier devouring a late night bite in a local McDonalds.

CHOCKABLOCK WAS RAM JAM JAM !

Chockablock at the Egg, in Kings Cross. Friday Night. Grime verses Rave. This is the second time I've been up to the Egg in the last month or so, and had a rough idea of what to expect, but still ...

Soooo what's the vibe ? Well pretty hot actually. From the offset, the clientele were as billed on the flyer. Grime kids, and (Nu?) Ravers, side by side. A place populated by mini-niyis and hood-la las, with a sprinkling of PSMs (Public School Mandem). And you know what ? They offset each other quite nicely, really bringing out the inner neon. A real little piece of East London for tourists, scenesters and the usual clubland characters. But all in North.

First tip for those thinking of hitting it up - get there before 11.00 if you want the luxury of nil door charge. Sometimes the bouncers don't start letting people in until 10.45 but last night doors were unlatched 10.00 sharp.

Plus, it's worth bearing in mind that Egg is a little out of the way from the main street. I've heard stories of a mythical shuttle bus, ferrying peeps back and forth for the price of one gold nugget, but as far as I'm concerned, these reports remain unconfirmed.

The second plus point is the drinks are cheap. Easy Vibe coming at £2.50 a pop.

The venue itself is quite unique. It managed to pull off the rare balance of feeling busy, but never too packed. Unlike the hell that is Fabric on a Friday night. I still find it hard to believe people actually pay a £15 door charge just to join the human sea that is a Fabric crowd. Blah blah blah. Back to the Egg.

The club has two rooms on the ground floor, lying either side of a large outdoor square covered by a marquee. Here lie the smokers, giant playing cards and the social stars. Soundtrack ? Chitter Chatter. It's here where peeps tend to convene early on in the night, making plots, for later.

Now the logistics are out of the way, lets talk music. When I ventured off into the rooms this is what was served up...

Room 1 a smoke filled gas chamber, hosted by an invisible DJ box bumping out minimal techno. Shirt wearing, chino slackers holding up the dancefloor and a 1-d sound. Not my cup. So I couldn't possibly offer a fair evaluation. Ahem.

Room 2 ? Live-O !!! After missing Kanjji Kinetic (grrrr...) we were entertained by BokBok & Manara. I first heard this male and female DJ combo at Night Slugz, a sort of artschool Bassline night (def recommend checking out). Their brand of bass blends tracks from Drop the Lime, Dexplicit and Sticky into one plucky sound. Check more of their stuff here.

After the duo melted the icy grime shuffle and reduced the radius of the dance floor circle, a hyped feeling was all in the air.

Whispers in the crowd that D double E was in the building proved true. It was clear who most were here to see. A point made extremely lucid when some younglings (see below, prizes for guessing who) told me "D Double E man. Sick, he is gonna be BAAAAAD. Do you reckon Dizzy might show up aswell?". I told them it was guaranteed.

Anyways, when the skinny one felt ready, he threw a lit match onto the sweltering crowd. Things exploded. Coolness dissipated to make way for mosh-pit fist banging, popping trigger fingers and calls of "Meeehh Meeehh". The E was murkiiiiing it. The sound system could have been tweaked a little, as oscillating between DJs and Emcees made the levels a little slap-dash but the sheer energy of the set covered up technical glitches.

I caught a bits and peices of the BullyBoys (best yet to come, I think), Vectra and Butterz (on form) but saw no sign of Namalee or Tic Tac repping the Ravers ... Does that mean Grime won ? Are these guys tied up in the basement somewhere, with glowsticks poking out of their eye sockets ? Or was I just dozey enough to miss them completely.

Anyway, heavy night. Big Plimpin' all round.

The Freaks come out at Night...

I'm perplexed. Why is it good things come in two? Why is it some weekends in London I'm searching (torch on the helmet style) for a banging night and all I get is a muted fart.

Tonight on the otherhand, I hardly searched didn't even stick my hands down the back of my sofa. And guess what? Yes, two, a pair of sick nights about to Boom & Squeak till the crowd shrieks!!

Firstly It has to be the Egg. Blowing up with a silly Friday session.

D Double E, yes just doing his tinnnng!!

A real highlight in the (from experience I can say this) super duper Grime Vs Rave room. Along with Dj Spyro and the Bully Boyz rocking the riddims; I can already taste the sounds!

So check out option one: The Egg, 200 York Way, Kings Cross, London
Also a good one for the cash-strapped, being free before 11:00pm and £8 after.

Option two? I can hardly contain myself because tonight in London, in Fabric, the mighty Swedish Bit lords that are Slagsmålsklubben (Fight club in our native tounge) will throw stones, beats, blips, condoms? At a crowd of Londoners. Ok. You say. "I don't know who these swedes are". Tonight if you want, you can!

And just to give your ears, eyes a flavour look down no! not at your crotch at the films!!

And if you want to see how they perform in a club...

This night however (calming my exhuberance) is not just about SMK
Boy 8-Bit is bussing his groove, as is Das pop. This night is batting all the balls out of the park !!

Rock and Stroll

Two important things are happening in my life on 19th July - the legend himself Pete Rock is playing at the Jazz Cafe and I am taking my first steps into a club since my clumsy mate won the 'fuck Will's knee up' competition hands down.

You gotta crawl before you can walk and since lying down caused me pain until about a week ago I'll have to go easy on the movement...but I'm sure that once Pete starts dropping some classique tracks I'll be limping off-beat like there's no tomorrow.

If there is a tomorrow I advise you to tuck your soul under your arm and lazily sway your way over to Camden Town's Jazz Cafe for 11pm on Saturday 19th, not least because (keep this d-lo) I've heard from a very reliable source that this night is going to bring world peace.

Been checkin out this chilly cold mix vandal DJ Undecided (and trust me that's a good thing). I mean, how can you decide with all the bangers, bassliners, four fours, snares and chats out there?

Undecided has decided to just mix it all up and bake his own brand of 'mix till you shock' cake, It tastes goody gum drops!!

So just woke up. Rubbing my eye's wide with disbelief.

I know, I know it was on Sunday and I know, I know today is not Monday! But good reasons can be given. Death of my goldfish at the paws/jaws of my recently murdered cat, coupled with a terrifying terminal hangover.

Excuses, excuses.

No excuses needed for Rise, it's atmosphere was sunkissed. The vibe? A real good giggle. Rodney P a personal highlight really got the party shockin. I even heard @ one point Fallacy & Fusions The Groundbreaker which got the crowd ground-breaking!

This day filled me with nostalgia in such a way it made me appreciate the present a lot more. Old dog's like Jimmy Cliff & Rodney P are still chewing the cud and just because they've been there done that they can rise and keep doing it&doing it&doing it again!

HOW VERY OLD SKOOL ...

So after Rise yesterday we're all feeling pretty wacked out. It was a good festival, although after three servings of chicken (Nandos, Jerk and Fried) iI was pretty much incapable of any movements by the end of it. Darrgha will have a full post on the antics, but until then I thought I'd answer the questions we're getting about the Um Brain Goo mix so far ...

The sample at the beginning ? Well that is from an amazing documentary, which aired on the BBC in the late eighties. It's unbeleivable to see how innocent the whole "urban" (and yes, I feel sick using that term, I know) scene was in those days. Buutt aaaaanyway, heres the peice in it's entirety ....

Ok, this isn't the newest thing on the electronic block, but it's still ace. After watching the Logan sama D Double and Fotsie session a couple of weeks back, we dug around for this classic.

The battle of the youngsters has been trundling along for a while now, but the council is pretty much in agreement - Double S CROWNED king.

After seeing his first verse, and watching it juxtaposed with Ghettos poor first attempt, he emerges as very, veeeery confident on the grey metallic.

Tomorrow Sunday 12/07 Finsbury Park (In the actual Park)

It's looking live-O! Myself and my two Swedish 'kompis' (Hommies) embarked on a espionage mission today. Sitting sipping coffee in beret's looking 'the real marquis' not suspect at all.

We can report that there is quite a fair sized fun fair on the Finsbury Park side of Finsbury Park. The main stage is parallel to the various carousels and dodgems'. In total we counted four stages of differing sizes and shapes; all within a click of each other.

Welcome in to the Hoxton youth council (A circle of plastic school chairs: brown, grey predominant colours although there is one orange one) please take a seat. Let me explain wadawadawhat we do here (to be read with a bass full mind-voice similar in sound to Mc Neat

We're the reload, we're the Boom & Squeak of riddims & beats. A groan grown from the guts and gutters of London zone 1 to 4,5,6. Oyster hoist the noiser's. Not a movement but council, votes and ticks, boxes and office furniture. *We wear our own clothes to work* Chill with the suitcheckshirtnecktielacestied tip you plims!!

Our first foray is to lunge forth on Friday 15th August, A10 Russian bar, Kingsland High St, Dalston.

From beyond the rave.

Beginning with the sightings of Zombie's decked out in to name a few: Reebok Classics, Moschino off key jeans/shirts, Burberry caps, Versace, Firetrap, Schott (jackets), Nike 110's. These Um Braingoo's were freaking City slickers, plims, Ukhiphopers the fuck out. We had to step in (Forward riddim driving our bopsfootheelhops). Aware that these Zombies just would not die like they were asked to, supposed to, meant to ? We decided to form a night of decapitating bassline, champagne garage, other nick-knacks as well as some bits and bobs. This was under our council remit for providing for all sections of our LoncitywidetownDon including zombies, the undead and the heart-stoppers (Just be aware there are more names for these folk, we have provided a couple for parents to be aware of).

This night is starting to rumble like the approaching tube you can hear it coming. So why not come a long if your dead or alive we will cater for all heartbeats on the evening. More on what more you can expect from the Hoxton Youth Council and From the beyond the rave in the next BLOG-GOO.
